Mount Makalu with its 8'463 m is the fifth highest mountain in the world and is situated in the Makalu Barun National Park. The Makalu, a wonderful and impressive peak, has long been considered the highest mountain in the world, because from Darjeeling, the southeast he appears higher than Mount Everest. The park is located in the districts of Solukhumbu and Sankhuwasabha in the north-eastern Nepal and contains a great wealth of flora and fauna as well as the view of the world's highest mountains like Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Chamlang and many other magnificent.

This trek takes us up to 5‘000 meters above sea level and therefore requires a good level of physical fitness. A stunning variety, unique cultural heritage and incredible views of snow capped peaks and vast landscape of Makalu Base Camp, an unforgettable treasure awaits us.

Our tour begins with a flight to Tumlingtar in the Middle East Nepal. The route takes us from sub tropical valley of the River Arun, towards the relative simple pass Keke La 4'230 m, Tutu La Pass 4'200 m until the Barun river valley.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

Day 02: Sightseeing in Kathmandu
Enjoy a guided tour of the famous historical and cultural attractions Kathmandu's, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Pashupatinath (holy Hindu Temple), Boudhanath (Buddhist Shrine) Swayembhunath (Monkey temple). In the evening we meet our tour guide to prepare our trek.

Day 03: Flight to Tumlingtar and drive to Num
The flight to Tumlingtar takes about 50 minutes. After we landed on the grass runway of Tumlingtar, we drive around 3 hours.

Day 04: Num - Seduwa 1‘540 m
The day begins with an almost vertical descent through woods, fields and terraces until Arun Khola. In this region, it is pretty hot - the forests on the sides of the valley offer some shade. After we have registered our apermit for the park, our adventure starts.

Day 05: Seduwa - Tashigaon 2‘070 m
From a ridge we have a view of the rivers Ipsuwa Khola in the west and in the east Kasuwa Khola. After we left the hillside behind us, we walk through quiet villages and rice fields then we finally reach Tashigaon.

Day 06: Tashigaon - Khongma 3‘560 m
Today we continue uphill to Khongma, the last stop before we cross the Shipton La pass and we enter the remote Barun Valley. From here we can see how the lowlands with rhododendron bush and plants are covered.

Day 07: Acclimatization day
Today we enjoy a day of rest for us to acclimatize to the altitude.

Day 08: Shiptong La Pass and Dobate 3‘650 m
A pass marathon awaits us today. First, the Khongma La and Tut La 4’055 m pass. On the way we get a great view of the Chamlang (7'319 m), peak 6 (6,524 m), the Peak 7 (6'758 m) plus Makalu and Kanchenjunga.

After we have left behind the Shipton La pass 4'220 m we arrive at the Kalo Pokhari lake then our last pass Keke La 4'152 m awaits us before we descend down to our camp in Debotay. 

Day 09: Dobate - Yangle Kharka 3‘600 m
We walk through a rhododendron forest to the Baruni River which brings us to the upper valley and finally to Kharka.

Day 10: Yangle Kharka - Merek 4‘500 m
We reach a height of over 4‘000 meters, it is important that we let our body time to get used to it.

Day 11: Merek - Shersong
We climb up the valley through rocks and yak pastures. As we approach Shersong, the south-east ridge of Mount Makalu comes into view.

Day 12: Day tour to Makalu Base Camp 5‘000 m
We should be sure that we have become accustomed to the altitude before we open ourselves to the Makalu Base Camp. Throughout the day we have great views to the Himalayas, before we walk back to Shersong.

Day 13: Yangle Kharka
On the way back we can catch last looks to Makalu before we reach Yangle Kharka.

Day 14: Yangle Kharka - Mumbuk
First we go further down. The last stretch to Mumbuck takes us through a gorge up.

Day 15: Mumbuk - Khongma
We continue through fir and rhododendron forests. We cross the passes Keke La, Shipton La and La Ghungru (Tutu La) before we reach Khongma.

Day 16: Khongma – Tashigaon
Today's trail brings us constantly almost straight down. We then reach the Sherpa village Tashigaon. 

Day 17: Tashigaon - Num
We walk the same route back from where we did come from. We leave Makalu Barun and walk down to the Arun Khola River and Seduwa, through a forest to Num to the opposite valley where we set up camp.

Day 18: Flight back to Kathmandu
We finish our magnificent adventure with a flight to Kathmandu.
