The Rara Lake is in the western part of Nepal and is the largest and deepest lake in the country. Our trek starts from Jumla.

The Rara Lake has a unique flora and fauna and is the home of many rare and endangered species, 16 species are endemic. The National Park is the home of the Black Bear, Leopard, Black Panther, Musk Deer, Red Panda, the Rhesus Macaque, Langur Monkey and many species of Birds.

It is the region of the Thakur. The Thakur Baba Temple is located in the southeastern corner of the lake.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu, transfer to Hotel

Day 02: Kathmandu Sightseeing
Enjoy the historical cultural sites of Kathmandu including UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pashupatinath (sacred Hindu temples), Boudhanath (Buddhist shrine) Swayembhunath (monkey temple), etc.

Day 03: Flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj
We fly to Nepalgunj, a small town located close to the Indian border.

Day 04: Flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla 2’540 m
Our next flight goes north, to Jumla which lies in a pretty valley.

Day 05: Jumla - Urthu 2’530 m
We follow the Tila Khola River and then turn north. We choose the alternative eastern route through the Patmara valley.

Day 06: Urthu – Tharmari 3’290 m
The trail leads you now through a narrow gorge to the village Padamara 2’910 m. Continue uphill until Khali Lagna pass at 3’642 m and slowly down to Tharmari.

Day 07: Tharmari -  Chautha 2’807 m
The path goes steeply down and again up until we reach Kapra Odar and Bharbhare, a classical Tibetan village. We climb down to the river and shortly afterwards we reach Chautha.

Day 08: Chautha - Dhotu 2’380 m
The trail goes along the river and up to Bhulbhule, the entrance to the Rara National Park. We walk slightly up the Ghurchi Lagna pass 3’480 m whit its many chortens and prayer flags. From the pass, it goes first slowly and then quite steeply down to Dhotu.

Day 09: Dhotu - Rara Lake 2’980 m
A short, pleasant walk with beautiful views. From Dhotu we cross a steep slope down to the river and back up to the Thakuri village Jhyari 2’635 m. Then it goes steadily up through forests until a ridge at 3’050 m, from where you have a great view of the Rara Lake.

Day 10: Rest day at the Rara Lake
The Rara Lake is the largest lake in Nepal. The area was declared a National Park in 1975. Here lives the Himalayan Bear, Musk Deer, Red Panda, Rhesus Macaque and Langur Monkeys etc. Take your time and walk the 13 km long route around the lake.

Day 11: Rara Lake - Gorosingha 3’050 m
From the western end of Rara Lake, the trail slowly goes along the Khatyar Khola. A slope leads you into Ghatta valley and to the small village Gorosingha.

Day 12: Gorosingha - Sinja 2’490 m
The path leads us further down the Ghatta valley, until Sinja. From 12th - 14th c. Sinja was the headquarters during the Malla dynasty. Still you can see the ruins of the old palace on the other side of the river. Another attraction is the interesting Bhagwati Temple, which is dedicated to the goddess of justice.

Day 13: Sinja - Jaljala Chaur 3'420 m
We let a few villages behind us, walking through the woods and fields. A steep climb leads to Jaljala Chaur, a large pasture full of horses.

Day 14: Jaljal Khor - Jumla 2’540 m
We walk now up and through forests and pastures to 3’510 m. This is followed by a pleasant descent to Jumla.

Day 15: Jumla - Neplagunj - Kathmandu
Return via Nepalgunj.
