  • Namaste" (I greet the God within you "), the Nepalese standard greeting for strangers, acquaintances and friends, is traditionally commanded with folded hands in prayer position.”Namaskar" is more formal version. The height, to which the compressed hands are raised, corresponds to the degree of deference. A foreigner not need to make too many thoughts - a Namaste with your hands at chest level is sufficient in most situations.
  • Do not feel offended if one hesitates to give you the hand. Normally you do not shake hands in Nepal, especially the women, but greets with "Namaste“.
  • Before entering a Nepalese home, a temple or stupa, please remove your shoes.
  • Do not touch with the left hand a persons or food. The left hand is considered in many countries as "unclean".
  • Please don’t touch with your feet a person or objects.
  • It is better to be properly dressed. But you can certainly choose comfortable clothes, it is important that you cover the body largely.
  • Ask for permission before entering a Hindu temple. The entrance of non-Hindu is in many temples prohibited.
  • Leave all leather products such as belts, bags and shoes in front of the temple.
  • The rounding of a temple or stupa is traditionally done clockwise.
  • Please take pictures of persons by permission.
  • Public gestures of affection between men and women are not common in Nepal and are particularly not appreciated by the older generation. You should therefore avoid affection in public.
  • Alms generate more beggars and do not solve the fundamental problems. If you really want to do good, check with your tour guide.
  • Be aware of the broker.
